What is a VAWA Psychological Evaluation and How Does It Help?

A VAWA psychological evaluation is a clinical assessment prepared to support a Violence Against Women Act self-petition. It documents the emotional and psychological impact of abuse, and connects that clinical picture to the legal standard USCIS applies.

Why the evaluation matters

USCIS adjudicators are not clinicians. They rely on written documentation to understand what a petitioner has been through and how it has affected their mental health.

A well-prepared evaluation translates lived experience into a clinical narrative — grounded in DSM-5 diagnostic criteria — that a reviewing officer can weigh alongside the other evidence in the file.

What the evaluation includes

A full clinical interview, standardized screening for trauma-related symptoms, a diagnostic formulation, and a written report tying the psychological findings to the abuse history described by the petitioner.

Reports are structured to meet USCIS documentation standards and to be defensible if the case is referred to immigration court.

What to expect from the process

Most evaluations are conducted over one or two telehealth sessions. Prior to the appointment we send an intake form so the clinician arrives prepared.

Written reports are typically delivered within 5–7 business days of the session, with rush turnaround available when a filing deadline requires it.
