Foreign nationals who currently reside in the United States or are crossing the border and meet the criteria for "refugee" status under international law may be granted asylum.
A person who has been granted asylum is protected from being sent back to their place of origin, is allowed to work in the country, is eligible to apply for a Social Security card, is able to apply for permission to travel abroad, and is able to petition to bring family members to the country. Additionally, asylees could be qualified for certain government initiatives like Medicaid or Refugee Medical Assistance.
